Church of St. Peter and St. Paul

Vilnius, Vilnius45 minutesBest: Year-round

A masterpiece of European Baroque containing over 2,000 stucco figures — saints, angels, battle scenes, and mythological creatures covering every surface of this 17th-century church.

The Church of Sts. Peter and Paul in Vilnius's Antakalnis district is one of the most extraordinary Baroque interiors in Europe. Built between 1668 and 1676, the church's exterior is relatively modest, but stepping inside reveals an explosion of white stucco decoration that covers virtually every surface. Over 2,000 individual stucco figures — saints, angels, demons, mythological creatures, battle scenes, and botanical motifs — cascade across the walls, ceiling, and columns. The work was created by Italian sculptors Giovanni Pietro Perti and Giovanni Maria Galli over a period of nearly 30 years. No two figures are alike.
