Gediminas Tower Viewpoint

Vilnius, Vilnius1 hourBest: Year-round; golden hour is magical

The iconic red-brick tower atop Gediminas Hill offers sweeping views across Vilnius Old Town, the Neris River, and the modern skyline — the symbolic heart of Lithuania.

Gediminas Tower is the remaining part of the Upper Castle of Vilnius, standing proudly on the hill where Grand Duke Gediminas legendarily dreamed of an iron wolf howling with the power of a hundred wolves — inspiring him to found the city. Today, the tower and its surrounding hilltop offer the most famous viewpoint in Lithuania's capital. From the observation platform at the top, visitors enjoy a 360-degree panorama that takes in the red rooftops of the UNESCO-listed Old Town, the winding Neris River, the modern skyscrapers of the new business district, and the green hills surrounding the city. On clear days, the view extends for dozens of kilometers. The tower houses a small museum about Vilnius Castle history, and a funicular railway operates from the base of the hill for those who prefer not to climb. However, the walk up through the wooded hillside is pleasant and offers changing perspectives on the city below.

Why Visit
