Lake Tauragnas

Utena, UtenaHalf dayBest: June to September

Lithuania's deepest lake at 60.5 meters, surrounded by pristine forests in the Aukštaitija highlands — a place of cold, crystal-clear waters and ancient legends.

Lake Tauragnas holds the distinction of being Lithuania's deepest lake, plunging to 60.5 meters in its central basin. Located in the Aukštaitija highlands, the lake is surrounded by forests and has maintained exceptional water clarity due to its depth and relatively undeveloped shoreline. The lake's waters are cold even in summer, fed by underground springs from deep beneath the surface. Local legends speak of the lake being bottomless — a belief that was only disproven when modern depth measurements were taken in the 20th century. The surrounding forests are home to diverse wildlife, and the lake itself supports several fish species.
