Žuvintas is Lithuania's oldest nature reserve, established in 1937 to protect the vast Lake Žuvintas and its surrounding wetlands. The reserve is one of the most important bird habitats in the Baltic states, supporting breeding populations of rare species including aquatic warblers, bitterns, spotted crakes, and hundreds of pairs of waterfowl.
The visitor center offers information about the reserve's ecology, and observation platforms around the lake periphery allow birdwatching without disturbing the nesting birds.
