Vilnius, Vilnius30 minutesBest: April 1st or summer

The bronze angel trumpeting from atop a column in the heart of the Užupis Republic — the symbol of Vilnius's most bohemian neighborhood and its artistic independence.

The Užupis Angel is the iconic symbol of the self-declared Republic of Užupis. Standing on a tall column in the main square, this bronze figure with trumpet raised has become one of Vilnius's most photographed landmarks. The angel replaced an earlier egg sculpture, symbolizing the neighborhood's evolution from neglected backwater to thriving artistic quarter. The statue was unveiled in 2002 and has since become a gathering point for the neighborhood's creative community. On April 1st — Užupis Independence Day — the angel's square becomes the center of celebrations that draw thousands of visitors.
