Museum of Unique Rocks in Mosėdis
Skuodas, Telšiai1.5-2 hoursBest: May to September
An open-air museum in western Lithuania containing over 200 glacial boulders — many with mysterious carved symbols, cup marks, and fossil inclusions spanning thousands of years.
The Museum of Unique Rocks in the small town of Mosėdis is one of Lithuania's most remarkable open-air collections. Founded by local teacher Vaclovas Intas, who spent decades collecting unusual glacial boulders from across the region, the museum now houses over 200 stones, each with a story to tell.
Some boulders bear ancient cup marks and carved symbols of unknown origin, possibly dating to the Bronze Age. Others contain visible fossils — corals, brachiopods, and trilobites from when this region lay beneath a tropical sea hundreds of millions of years ago. The collection also includes stones with unusual mineral inclusions, natural holes, and bizarre shapes that have inspired local legends.
Why Visit
A genuinely unique museum that spans geology, archaeology, and folklore. The cup-marked stones are particularly mysterious and provide a tangible connection to Lithuania's prehistoric past.
