Tytuvenal Monastery

Kelmė, Šiauliai1-1.5 hoursBest: Year-round

A beautifully preserved 17th-century Bernardine monastery complex — one of Lithuania's finest baroque sacred ensembles with a revered chapel of miraculous icons.

The Tytuvėnai Bernardine Monastery is one of Lithuania's most impressive sacred architectural ensembles. Founded in 1614, the complex includes a grand church, monastery buildings, cloisters, and the Chapel of the Steps — a covered stairway chapel modeled on Rome's Scala Santa. The architecture blends Renaissance and early Baroque styles with Lithuanian regional characteristics. The monastery's greatest treasure is its collection of votive offerings and the revered image of the Virgin Mary, which draws pilgrims seeking healing and spiritual grace. The complex has survived wars, fires, and Soviet-era neglect to be carefully restored as a functioning monastery and cultural center. The surrounding town is quiet and atmospheric, adding to the contemplative mood.
