Trakai Karaim Heritage

Trakai, Vilnius2-3 hoursBest: Year-round

The cultural heritage of the Karaim people — a tiny Turkic ethnic group brought to Lithuania in the 14th century, whose unique houses, kenesa temple, and cuisine survive in Trakai.

The Karaim (Karaites) of Trakai represent one of Europe's most remarkable ethnic minorities. Brought to Lithuania from Crimea by Grand Duke Vytautas in the late 14th century to serve as elite guards, this Turkic people have maintained their distinct identity, language, and religion for over 600 years despite numbering only a few hundred in Lithuania today. Their presence in Trakai is visible in the distinctive wooden houses with three windows facing the street (one for God, one for the Grand Duke, one for the family), the kenesa (Karaim prayer house), and the famous kibinai — traditional meat-filled pastries that have become Trakai's signature dish. The Karaim Ethnographic Museum tells the story of this extraordinary community.
