Šeškinė Soviet Murals
Vilnius, Vilnius1-2 hoursBest: Year-round
Surviving Soviet-era mosaic murals on apartment buildings in Vilnius's Šeškinė district — colorful relics of socialist realist public art that are slowly disappearing.
The Šeškinė residential district in Vilnius retains some of the city's best-surviving Soviet-era mosaic murals. These large, colorful mosaic panels — depicting themes of labor, science, nature, and socialist progress — were applied to the facades of apartment blocks during the 1970s and 1980s as part of the Soviet approach to public art.
The murals represent a fascinating intersection of art and ideology. Rendered in durable glass and ceramic mosaic, they were designed to beautify the mass housing projects that characterize Soviet-era districts. As buildings are renovated or insulated, these murals are being lost — making the surviving examples increasingly precious as documents of an era and aesthetic that is rapidly disappearing.
