Šatrija Hill

Telšiai, Telšiai1-2 hoursBest: Midsummer (June 23-24); autumn for views

The legendary gathering place of Lithuanian witches, rising 228 meters above the Samogitian highlands — a mystical hill steeped in pagan folklore and solstice traditions.

Šatrija Hill is the most legendary mountain in Lithuania. Rising to 228 meters in the Samogitian highlands, it is traditionally believed to be the gathering place of Lithuanian witches (raganos) who would fly here on midsummer's night to dance, feast, and work their magic. In pre-Christian Lithuania, Šatrija was a major pagan worship site. Its conical shape and prominent position in the landscape made it a natural cathedral for sky worship and solstice celebrations. Even after Christianization, folk traditions persisted, and the hill retained its reputation as a place of supernatural power. Today, Šatrija remains an important cultural landmark. Midsummer celebrations are still held here, and the hill offers fine views across the rolling Samogitian landscape. The climb to the summit passes through meadows and forest, and the atmosphere — especially at twilight — retains a quality that makes it easy to believe in the old stories.
