Puntukas Stone

Anykščiai, Utena30 minutesBest: Year-round

Lithuania's second-largest glacial boulder, standing in the Anykščiai forest with bas-reliefs of legendary Lithuanian pilots Darius and Girėnas carved into its face.

Puntukas is one of Lithuania's most famous natural monuments — a massive glacial erratic boulder deposited by retreating ice sheets thousands of years ago. Weighing an estimated 265 tonnes, it's the second-largest boulder in Lithuania. In 1943, sculptor Bronius Pundzius carved bas-reliefs of pilots Steponas Darius and Stasys Girėnas into the rock's face, commemorating their tragic 1933 transatlantic flight. The stone stands in a forest clearing near Anykščiai and has become a pilgrimage site for Lithuanians honoring the aviators who died attempting to fly non-stop from New York to Kaunas.
