Pūčkoriai Exposure
Vilnius, Vilnius1-2 hoursBest: Year-round
Vilnius's hidden geological wonder — a dramatic 65-meter high sandy cliff carved by the Vilnia River, also known as Lithuania's 'Grand Canyon' and accessible within the city limits.
The Pūčkoriai Exposure (also called the Pūčkoriai Outcrop) is Vilnius's most dramatic geological feature — a towering 65-meter-high cliff of glacial sediments exposed by millennia of erosion by the Vilnia River. The sheer scale of the exposed sandy cliff face, revealing layers of sand, gravel, and clay deposited during the last Ice Age, has earned it the informal nickname 'Lithuania's Grand Canyon.'
Remarkably, this geological wonder is located within the Vilnius city limits, in the Pavilniai Regional Park. A network of trails leads to viewpoints above and below the cliff. The exposure is an active geological feature — sections regularly collapse, revealing fresh layers and creating a constantly changing landscape.
Why Visit
A geological wonder hiding within a capital city. The scale of the cliff is genuinely surprising and reveals Vilnius's Ice Age origins in dramatic fashion.
