Palūšė Wooden Church

Ignalina, Utena30-45 minutesBest: May to September

One of the oldest and most beautiful wooden churches in Lithuania, standing on the shore of Lake Lūšiai in Aukštaitija National Park — a masterpiece of folk architecture.

The Palūšė Church is one of the finest examples of wooden religious architecture in Lithuania. Built in 1757 entirely of timber, the church stands in a picturesque setting on the shore of Lake Lūšiai in the heart of Aukštaitija National Park. The church's octagonal plan, shingled roof, and elegant proportions represent the pinnacle of Lithuanian folk building traditions. Inside, the wooden interior is warm and intimate, with folk-style paintings and carvings that blend Catholic imagery with traditional Lithuanian motifs. The craftsmanship is remarkable — no nails were used in the original construction.
