Pagramantis Mound
Tauragė, Tauragė1-1.5 hoursBest: May to October
One of Lithuania's most impressive hillforts with a commanding view over the Jūra River valley — a strategic stronghold since the Iron Age that now offers peaceful panoramic views.
Pagramantis Mound is one of the most dramatically situated hillforts in western Lithuania. Rising steeply above the Jūra River valley, this ancient fortification site offers commanding views across the river floodplain and surrounding forests. Archaeological evidence indicates the site was fortified since at least the first millennium CE.
The mound was a strategic strongpoint during the wars between Lithuanian tribes and the Teutonic Knights in the 13th-14th centuries. Today, a steep wooden staircase leads to the flat summit, where the outlines of the former fortification are still visible in the terrain. On clear days, the view extends for kilometers across the Jūra valley.
