Nemunas Delta Regional Park

The Nemunas Delta is one of Europe's greatest wetland ecosystems, where Lithuania's mightiest river breaks into a labyrinth of channels, islands, and flooded meadows before reaching the Curonian Lagoon. This vast, flat landscape is a birdwatcher's paradise and one of the most important migration corridors on the continent. In spring, the annual floods transform the delta into a temporary inland sea, attracting hundreds of thousands of migrating birds. Geese, swans, cranes, and ducks gather in staggering numbers, creating one of Europe's most spectacular wildlife events. The Ventės Ragas ornithological station at the delta's edge has been monitoring bird migration since 1929. The delta is also culturally fascinating. Small fishing villages on raised ground have survived centuries of flooding, and their distinctive wooden houses, smoke-houses, and fishing traditions reflect a way of life adapted to the water. The delta's remoteness and watery landscape give it an atmosphere unlike anywhere else in Lithuania — a place where land and water merge.
