Antanas Mončys House-Museum

Palanga, Klaipėda1 hourBest: May to September

The former home and studio of Lithuanian sculptor Antanas Mončys, now a museum displaying his abstract wooden sculptures and personal art collection in a charming Palanga setting.

The Antanas Mončys House-Museum in Palanga preserves the home and artistic legacy of one of Lithuania's most distinctive modern sculptors. Mončys (1921-1993) spent much of his career in France but left instructions for his work to return to Lithuania after his death. The museum displays his remarkable abstract sculptures, primarily carved from wood, alongside his paintings, graphic works, and personal collection of folk art. Mončys's sculptures have an organic, flowing quality that seems to capture movement and emotion in solid wood. His work bridges Lithuanian folk carving traditions and European modernist sculpture. The museum building itself — a traditional Lithuanian wooden house — provides an intimate, personal setting for the art. The garden also features several larger sculptures, and the whole experience feels like visiting an artist's home rather than a formal gallery. It's a hidden gem even in Palanga, overshadowed by the town's famous amber museum and beach.

Why Visit

An intimate encounter with one of Lithuania's finest modern sculptors. The personal setting and beautiful wooden sculptures create a memorable, contemplative experience.
