Merkys River Kayaking

The Merkys River is Lithuania's fastest-flowing river and one of the finest kayaking routes in the Baltic region. Winding through the ancient forests of Dzūkija National Park, the river offers a wilderness experience that feels far removed from civilization. The clear, tea-colored water flows over sandy bottoms and occasional rapids, past banks draped in overhanging alders and ancient pines. The river is relatively easy but engaging for kayakers of all levels — small rapids and fallen trees provide enough challenge to keep things interesting without being dangerous. Multi-day trips are popular, with wild camping on sandy riverbanks. Wildlife sightings are common: kingfishers flash past, herons fish in the shallows, and beavers have reshaped sections of the riverbank.
