Merkinė Hill Fort

Varėna, Alytus1-2 hoursBest: Autumn for foliage; spring for river flooding

A dramatic hill fort at the confluence of the Nemunas and Merkys rivers, offering sweeping views over Dzūkija's forests — once a major medieval Lithuanian stronghold.

Merkinė Hill Fort stands at one of the most strategic and scenic points in southern Lithuania, where the Merkys River flows into the mighty Nemunas. This ancient fortification, once one of the most important castles in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, now offers visitors one of the finest river viewpoints in the country. From the hilltop, you can see the dramatic confluence of the two rivers, surrounded by the dense forests of Dzūkija — Lithuania's most heavily forested region. The panorama is especially beautiful in autumn when the forest canopy turns to gold and copper, reflected in the dark waters below. Merkinė was a significant town in medieval Lithuania, and Grand Duke Gediminas died here in 1341. The hill fort was a key defensive position, and its strategic location at the river junction made it an important trading center. Today, the quiet hilltop is a peaceful place for contemplation, with interpretive panels explaining the site's rich history.
