Medininkai Castle
Vilnius district, Vilnius1-1.5 hoursBest: May to October
The ruins of Lithuania's oldest stone castle — massive 14th-century walls still stand 15 meters high in the quiet countryside near the Belarusian border.
Medininkai Castle is the largest castle by area in Lithuania and among the oldest stone defensive structures in the country. Built in the first half of the 14th century, the castle's massive stone walls — reaching 15 meters high and nearly 2 meters thick — enclosed a vast rectangular courtyard of nearly two hectares.
Today, the castle stands in partial ruin, with its impressive walls and one restored tower creating an atmospheric medieval landmark in the quiet countryside near the Belarusian border. The setting, surrounded by fields and forests far from major tourist routes, gives the castle a contemplative, almost forgotten quality.
