Lūžija Bridge
Šilutė, Tauragė15-30 minutesBest: Year-round
A rare surviving German drawbridge from the Memelland era — a charming piece of early 20th-century engineering in the Nemunas Delta that still functions.
The Lūžija drawbridge is one of the last surviving German-era drawbridges in Lithuania. Built in the early 20th century when this region was part of the Memelland territory of East Prussia, the small but elegant steel drawbridge crosses a canal in the Nemunas Delta. It is still operated manually, raised by hand to allow boats to pass.
The bridge is a charming relic of the region's German heritage and the engineering solutions developed for life in the delta, where waterways were the primary transport routes. Watching the bridge master raise the span for a passing boat is a delightful experience that connects visitors to the delta's unique water-based way of life.
