Lentvaris Manor

Trakai district, Vilnius1-2 hoursBest: Year-round; autumn especially

A magnificent but crumbling 19th-century manor and park near Trakai — once one of Lithuania's grandest estates, now a hauntingly beautiful ruin undergoing slow restoration.

Lentvaris Manor was one of the grandest estates in Lithuania, built in the 19th century for the Tiškevičiai family (the same family behind the Palanga Amber Museum palace). The neogothic mansion, surrounded by an English-style park with a lake, was designed to be a showcase of aristocratic taste and wealth. After Soviet nationalization, the estate fell into severe disrepair. The mansion's roof collapsed, walls crumbled, and the once-magnificent park grew wild. Slow restoration efforts have begun, but much of the estate retains the romantic atmosphere of beautiful decay. The overgrown park, with its hidden lake, grottos, and ancient trees, is perhaps even more beautiful in its wild state.

Why Visit

Romantic decay at its most beautiful. The contrast between former grandeur and current ruin creates a powerfully atmospheric experience.
