Klaipėda Fachwerk Old Town

Klaipėda, Klaipėda2-3 hoursBest: Year-round; summer for outdoor café culture

The only Prussian-German half-timbered (Fachwerk) Old Town in Lithuania — colorful timber-framed buildings from the 18th-19th century create a distinctly un-Lithuanian atmosphere.

Klaipėda's Old Town is architecturally unique in Lithuania. As the former Prussian city of Memel, Klaipėda developed a distinctive Fachwerk (half-timbered) architectural style that is more reminiscent of northern Germany than the rest of Lithuania. The colorful timber-framed buildings, with their exposed wooden beams and whitewashed or painted panels, line narrow cobblestone streets. The Old Town is compact and walkable, centered around Theater Square with its iconic statue of Ännchen von Tharau. Warehouses along the Danė River have been converted into restaurants, galleries, and cultural venues, while the residential streets retain their historic character.

Why Visit

A slice of Prussian Germany in Lithuania — the half-timbered architecture is unique in the country and creates a charming, unexpected atmosphere.

History

Klaipėda was the Prussian city of Memel until 1923 when Lithuania regained control. The Fachwerk buildings date primarily from the 18th-19th centuries.
