Kaunas Reservoir Sea
Kaunas, KaunasHalf dayBest: June to September
Lithuania's largest artificial lake — created by damming the Nemunas River in the 1950s, now a vast inland sea with beaches, sailing, and surprising coastal atmosphere.
The Kaunas Reservoir (Kauno Marios) is Lithuania's largest body of water — a vast artificial lake created in 1959 by damming the Nemunas River for hydroelectric power. Stretching over 63 square kilometers, it resembles a genuine inland sea, with sandy beaches, sailing clubs, and weather that can turn the water choppy enough for real waves.
The reservoir has become one of central Lithuania's premier recreational areas. Sandy beaches at Lampėdžiai and Rumšiškės attract swimmers in summer, while sailing and windsurfing are popular when the wind picks up. The eastern shores, where the reservoir meets the Nemunas Loops, offer dramatic landscapes where forested hills plunge into the water.
Why Visit
Lithuania's unexpected inland sea. The sheer scale of the reservoir and its beach culture surprise visitors who don't expect such a maritime atmosphere in the middle of the country.
