Kaunas Funicular Railways

Kaunas, Kaunas30 minutes eachBest: Year-round

Two surviving early 20th-century funicular railways in Kaunas — charming engineering relics that still transport passengers up the steep hillsides of the city.

Kaunas is one of very few European cities with two working funicular railways. Built during the interwar period when Kaunas was Lithuania's capital, these steep cable railways were modern marvels of their time and remain charming engineering relics that are still in daily use. The Žaliakalnis Funicular (1931) and the Aleksotas Funicular (1935) each climb steep hillsides that separate Kaunas's riverside center from the residential neighborhoods above. The original wooden carriages have been lovingly maintained, and the short rides offer both a unique transport experience and excellent views over the city. The Aleksotas funicular in particular leads to a viewpoint offering one of the finest panoramas of Kaunas Old Town.

Why Visit
