Kamanos Strict Nature Reserve

Akmenė, Šiauliai2-3 hoursBest: May to September

A vast raised bog in northern Lithuania, one of the best-preserved in the Baltics — a primeval landscape of sphagnum moss, dark pools, and rare wildlife near the Latvian border.

Kamanos is one of the best-preserved raised bogs in the entire Baltic region. This vast expanse of sphagnum moss, dark pools, and stunted pines has been forming for over 8,000 years, creating a landscape that is both ancient and eerily beautiful. The reserve is home to numerous rare and protected species, including several orchid species, carnivorous plants, and rare breeding birds. A peripheral trail allows visitors to experience the bog's edge without entering the most sensitive areas.

Why Visit

One of the Baltics' finest bogs — 8,000 years of ecological development in a primeval landscape rarely seen in modern Europe.
