Hill of Witches (Raganų Kalnas)
Neringa, Klaipėda45-90 minutesBest: May to October (atmospheric in fog)
An enchanting trail through the pine forests of Juodkrantė on the Curonian Spit, lined with over 80 fantastical wooden sculptures of witches, devils, and characters from Lithuanian folklore.
The Hill of Witches is one of the most magical places on the Curonian Spit. Located near the village of Juodkrantė, this outdoor gallery features over 80 large wooden sculptures carved by Lithuanian folk artists, depicting characters from Samogitian mythology and Baltic folklore.
The sculptures line a winding trail through a beautiful pine forest on a sandy hill. You'll encounter witches stirring cauldrons, playful devils, mythical creatures, and figures from traditional Lithuanian fairy tales. The carvings range from whimsical to genuinely eerie, and the forest setting amplifies the atmosphere — especially in fog or at dusk.
Created between 1979 and 1991, the sculptures were carved during annual workshops that brought together folk artists from across Lithuania. Each piece is unique and tells its own story, making the hill a living museum of Baltic folk art tradition. The trail takes about 30-45 minutes to walk and is suitable for families.
Why Visit
An unforgettable walk through a forest of mythology. The combination of haunting wooden sculptures and ancient pine forest creates an atmosphere unlike anything else in Lithuania.
History
The sculpture trail was created between 1979 and 1991 during annual folk art symposiums. Local legends claim the hill was a gathering place for witches during midsummer celebrations.
