Ginučiai Watermill
Ignalina, Utena1 hourBest: May to October
A beautifully restored 19th-century watermill in Aukštaitija National Park — the last working watermill in Lithuania, still grinding flour with water power.
The Ginučiai Watermill is the last functioning watermill in Lithuania and one of the most charming historic buildings in Aukštaitija National Park. Built in the 19th century on a stream connecting two lakes, the wooden mill has been carefully restored to working condition and continues to grind grain using water power, just as it has for over 150 years.
Visitors can watch the mill in operation — the great wooden wheel turning, gears meshing, and heavy stones grinding grain into flour. The miller explains the mechanics and history of milling in Lithuania, where water-powered mills were once found on nearly every suitable stream. The setting — a wooden building beside a rushing millrace, surrounded by lakes and forest — is quintessentially Lithuanian.
