Dubingiai Castle Island

Molėtai, Vilnius2 hoursBest: May to September

An island fortress site in Lake Asveja — Lithuania's longest lake — where powerful medieval nobles built a castle and the ruins still rise from the water.

Dubingiai Castle occupies a small island in Lake Asveja (also known as Lake Dubingiai), Lithuania's longest lake at over 30 kilometers. The castle was built by the powerful Radziwiłł family in the 16th century and served as an important stronghold and hunting lodge. The island location, connected to shore by a causeway, provided natural defenses. Today, the castle ruins — fragments of walls and foundations — still stand on the island, surrounded by the vast lake waters. Archaeological excavations have revealed earlier settlement layers predating the castle. The site's combination of medieval ruins, an island setting, and one of Lithuania's most impressive lakes makes it a hauntingly beautiful destination. A monument to Grand Duke Gediminas's wife stands on the nearby shore.
