Druskininkai Mineral Springs

Druskininkai, Alytus2-3 hoursBest: Year-round

Historic mineral springs in Lithuania's premier spa town, where naturally mineralized waters have been used for healing since the 18th century — freely accessible in a beautiful park setting.

Druskininkai has been Lithuania's most famous spa town since the late 18th century, when its mineral springs were first recognized for their therapeutic properties. The town's name itself comes from 'druska' (salt), referring to the high mineral content of its waters. Several mineral springs are freely accessible in the town's parks and along the Nemunas River promenade. Each spring has a different mineral composition — some are salty, some sulphurous, some iron-rich. Visitors can taste the waters (some are an acquired taste!) and learn about their reputed healing properties at information panels.

Why Visit

Sample naturally mineralized waters in one of Eastern Europe's oldest and most charming spa towns. The springs are free and set in beautiful parks.

History

First documented in 1636. Recognized as a spa destination in 1794 under the Russian Empire. Developed as a Soviet-era health resort and reinvented as a modern spa town.
