Devils' Museum (Žmuidzinavičius Museum)

Kaunas, Kaunas1-2 hoursBest: Year-round

The world's only museum dedicated entirely to depictions of the devil — housing over 3,000 devil figurines, paintings, and sculptures from around the world.

The Devils' Museum in Kaunas is genuinely one of the most unique museums in the world. Founded on the private collection of painter Antanas Žmuidzinavičius, who spent decades amassing devil figurines, the museum now houses over 3,000 representations of the devil from more than 70 countries. The collection ranges from the terrifying to the hilarious. Lithuanian folk devils are often portrayed as bumbling, good-natured tricksters — quite different from the menacing Western conception. You'll find devils carved from wood, cast in metal, molded in clay, and rendered in every material imaginable. Some are genuinely beautiful works of folk art, while others are delightfully tacky souvenirs. One of the most famous exhibits shows Hitler and Stalin dancing together as devils over Lithuania — a powerful political statement that resonates with the country's painful 20th-century history. The museum occupies a handsome building on Kaunas's main boulevard, and the quirky collection provides a fascinating window into how different cultures around the world imagine evil.
