Biržai Karst Region

Biržai, Panevėžys3-4 hoursBest: May to September

Lithuania's most dramatic karst landscape — over 9,000 sinkholes, underground rivers, and dissolving bedrock that occasionally swallows roads and fields without warning.

The Biržai karst region is one of Lithuania's most geologically extraordinary areas. Beneath the seemingly flat northern Lithuanian landscape, underground water has been dissolving gypsum and dolomite bedrock for millions of years, creating a honeycomb of cavities, underground rivers, and sinkholes. Over 9,000 sinkholes have been documented in the region, ranging from shallow depressions to dramatic collapsed features meters deep. New sinkholes still appear, sometimes swallowing sections of road or farmland. The Kirkilai lakes nearby are among the most dramatic examples — deep, crystal-clear lakes formed by collapsed cave systems.
