Birutė Hill (Birutės Kalnas)

Palanga, Klaipėda30-60 minutesBest: Year-round; sunset especially

A sacred hill in Palanga's botanical park where the legendary pagan priestess Birutė once tended the eternal flame — now a peaceful hilltop with a chapel and views over the Baltic.

Birutė Hill in Palanga is one of Lithuania's most romantic and historically significant sacred sites. According to legend, the beautiful pagan priestess Birutė tended a sacred fire on this hilltop, watching over the Baltic Sea. Grand Duke Kęstutis, smitten by her beauty, carried her off to be his wife. Today, a small chapel stands on the hilltop, surrounded by the trees of Palanga's magnificent botanical park. The hill offers views through the canopy toward the Baltic Sea, and the atmosphere retains something of the sacred character that made it a place of worship long before Christianity arrived in Lithuania.
