Ablinga Memorial Mound

Kretinga, Klaipėda30-60 minutesBest: Year-round

A haunting memorial site in western Lithuania where the entire male population of Ablinga village was massacred by Nazi forces in 1941 — marked by wooden sculptures and a solemn remembrance mound.

The Ablinga Memorial Mound commemorates one of the most tragic events of the Nazi occupation of Lithuania. In June 1941, German forces murdered all 42 men and boys of the small village of Ablinga in retaliation for alleged resistance activities. The memorial, created by sculptor Kęstutis Balčiūnas, features a series of powerful wooden sculptures representing the victims, arranged around a central mound. The raw emotional power of the carved figures, combined with the quiet rural setting, creates one of Lithuania's most moving memorial sites.

Why Visit

A profoundly moving memorial that honors victims of Nazi atrocity. The wooden sculptures are powerful works of art in their own right.
